Tilicho Lake trek is a high-altitude trek that ascends above 4,500 meters. The trekking route has numerous ups & downs, rugged, rocky, and steep parts as well. Likewise, you will be traveling in a remote area. All of these factors make Tilicho Lake difficult.

You can do Tilicho Lake Trek in 9 to 14 days or above if you combine Thorong La Pass too in the venture.

To reach Tilicho Lake, you have to drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara to Chame. From here, you will trek to Manang and ascend to Tilicho Lake.

Because of the cold temperature, trekkers do not swim in Tilicho Lake. Moreover, there is no public provision for swimming or boating on the lake because of the inaccessible shoreline.

The depth of Tilicho Lake is 200 meters. It is 4km long and 1.2 km wide.

Located in the Dolpa district, Nepal, Shey Phoksundo (3,900 m) is the deepest lake in Nepal. The lake is 4.8 km long, 1.5 km wide, and has a depth of 145 Meter.

Tilicho Lake (4,919 m) has held the title of the highest lake in the world for a very long time. In 2019, Kajin Sara Lake was discovered at 5002 meters in Chame, Nepal, which is now the highest lake in the world.

Tilicho Lake is famous for the trekking experience it offers. The lifestyle and culture of the mountain people are an intriguing part of the trek. Similarly, the breathtaking landscapes and towering views of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Annapurna, Mt. Nilgiri, Pisang Peak, Tilicho Peak, and many others make the trek incredible. Tilicho Lake itself is one of the gorgeous highest alpine lakes located at 4,919 meters that attracts travelers.

    Useful Information

Best time of the year to go on Tilicho Lake Trek

The best time to go to Tilicho Lake Trek is from March to April and October to November. Spring and Autumn have the most stable weather and moderate climate to do trekking in the Himalayas. The views of mountains and the overall surrounding area are fantastic in these two seasons.
Trekkers from all around the world hit different trekking routes in the Annapurna Himalayas in spring & autumn. The temperature varies from 18°C to 5°C. You may feel colder at the higher elevation.

    Tilicho Lake Trek difficulty

Tilicho Lake Trek's difficulty is moderate to challenging. The isolation of the region from the rest of the country has made the overall trek more difficult than it should be. Of course, the trail is rugged and has numerous ascends & descends throughout the trek. You have to be able to walk 6 to 7 hours a day. There are many steep sections too.
Along with that, the bare minimum facilities and high elevation add up to the difficulty level of Tilicho Lake Trekking. You have to be careful of altitude sickness and its symptoms. Trekkers usually suffer from altitude sickness during high elevation ventures if their bodies do not acclimate properly.

Read below to know more about altitude sickness and its symptoms:

    Symptoms of altitude sickness

    • Fatigue
    • Difficulty in sleeping
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Shortness of breath
    • Headache
    • Loss of appetite

    Preventive measures

    • Include ample rest days in the trek
    • Maintain the elevation rise under 500 meters every day
    • Eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water or other fluids
    • Do not consume alcoholic drinks or smoke while trekking
    • If you see any uneasiness or above symptoms descend to a lower altitude to spend the night
    • Inform your team leader and take the proper measures right away

Mode of transportation during the trek

During the Tilicho Lake Trek, you will take a long drive from Kathmandu to the starting point of the trek. All the ground transportation as per the Tilicho Lake Trek itinerary is done through our private car or tourist van. We also offer airport pick up and drop service.

    Electricity & Charging Facilities

The electricity and charging facility during the Tilicho Lake Trekking is good. Every lodge or teahouse has its charging stations that you can use to charge your devices, paying a few extra bucks. Similarly, many trekkers carry a solar charger or bank with them. Spare batteries will also come in very handy.

    Sim Card & WiFi

Internet service may not be stable all the time because of high elevation and fluctuating weather. You may get WiFi service at the lower elevation. If you want, we can help you get a Nepali Sim card with data to use the internet during the trek. Even cellular data may not have a good connection all the time.

We will give you the packing list that will help you to buy or rent trekking clothing and gear. During the Tilicho Lake Trek, we use a duffel bag to pack all the heavy clothing and essentials. The duffel bags are carried by the porters. Every trekker has a weight limit of 15 kgs. Usually, trekkers store their excess luggage in the hotel's locker room while trekking.

    Child policy

Child policy for high-altitude trekking may differ from one individual to another. Even though treks like this are not recommended for a child, he/she still may pursue it under the guidance of a verified guardian. Trekking in the Himalayas for a child depends on his/her health condition, fitness, and experience. Get in touch with us to know more in detail about the Tilicho Lake Trek child policy.

    Tipping to crew members

Tipping is not included in our Tilicho Lake Trek package cost. So, if you are satisfied with the work of our crew then feel free to tip them to your heart's content. There is no fixed number. If you are buying any service out of our package cost include section, then it will be your personal expenses, which are not covered by the company. Things like drinks, snacks, and shopping are not covered by the Tilicho Lake trek cost. Moreover, travel insurance, tips, international flights, etc are also not covered in the package cost.

Tilicho Lake trekking is a high-altitude trek, therefore we always recommend getting travel insurance. Even though you will be trekking with the best guide, the crisis may take place during the trek. Because you are trekking in a remote area, the only way we can provide you with emergency medical assistance in the worst case is through air evacuation. So, make sure your travel insurance has air evacuation and medical bill coverage.
