About Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek

Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek follows the classic route to the Everest Base Camp. This route was first mapped to reach the EBC by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa. Instead of flying directly to Lukla (2,860 m), during Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek 26 days, you will drive to Jiri (2,370 m) and gradually ascend to Lukla. In case you are curious, Jiri to Lukla distance is 49.8 km and Jiri to Namche Bazar distance is 52 km. The Jiri to Lukla trek itinerary goes through numerous villages and lush forests, crossing many small passes. 

Jiri trek to Everest is a less conventional longer route perfect for travellers who can spend a long time on the trail. Even though this trek also takes you to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) at the end, the close interaction with locals and unique trekking experience is something to look for. Jiri to Everest Base Camp distance is appro. 60 kilometres. The trek offers breathtaking scenery and stunning Himalayan mountain views.
To make the trek more adventurous, we will take you to Gorgeous Gokyo Valley, where you can see stunning Gokyo Lakes and explore Gokyo villages. Our Jiri to Everest Base Camp trek itinerary also crosses two challenging passes of the Khumbu region- Cho La and Rejo La. The route to these passes is extremely difficult and involves ice walking.

On the very first day of your arrival, you will be received by a representative of Adventure White Mountain and he will transfer you to hotel. If you are not exhausted by your journey then you can roam around Thamel and have mini refreshment. Overnight in a hotel.

 The drive from Kathmandu to Jiri is around Seven hours covering the distance of 187 kilometers. Jirel people are known as the local people of Jiri. They follow the cross-cultural link with Sherpa and Sunuwar. Basically they are Tibeto-Burman.

 You will up climb till 2,400m and then walk down towards Shivalaya. In between, you see Tamang villages. To go vertically up towards Deurali you have to cross some wooden bridges. Different Mani walls are seen in Deurali. You spend a night at Deurali.

 Our next instant destination is Bhandara. Near to Bhandara, you will encounter Sherpa village. Various prayer flags and Gompa are communal here. Crossing a suspension bridge ahead will get you to Kinja where the trail ahead is steep. Walking for some distance you reach Sete where we will break our day.

 Today you need to buck yourself up as it is a tough walk till Lamjura Bhanjyang. You will walk through the jungle. Actually Lamjura Bhanjyang is a peak between Jiri and Namche Bazaar. Viewing remarkable Mt. Gaurishankar, Number Himal and Dudh Kunda we reach Junbesi. Overnight in Junbesi.

 Now the trail leads towards Khumbu Region by Crossing Junbesi Khola (River). We climb uphill. Some short glances of Everest are seen during our walk. Now we reach at a suspension bridge just above Dudh Khola. We happen to see various Mani walls and Buddhist Chorten on our route to Nunthala. Overnight in Nunthala.

 Today is a downhill walk till Dudh Koshi River. Passing through a Rai village we arrive at Juggling. A walk of around a couple of hours takes us to Kharikhola. It is a place where we will halt at night.

 Parting Kharikhola behind we happens to cross a suspension bridge. Climbing a steep hill takes us to Buspa. The route passes through Sherpa village. We follow the temperamental route to arrive at Puiyan. Overnight in Puiyan.

 Walking for about an hour we come to a ridge at an altitude of 2,800m. We move through Lukla airport alongside Dudh Koshi. We get an opportunity to see Mt. Nupla (5,885m), Kusum Kangaru (6,367m) and Mt. Kwongde range. Again traveling for around two hours leads us to Phakding village. Overnight in Phakding.

 To reach Namche Bazaar we need to follow the track of Dudh Koshi River. The current destination is Monjo which is an entrance to Sagarmatha National Park. After walking for some more time we arrive at Namche Bazaar. Here we will get to know the local people and their unique culture. We will spend our night at Namche Bazaar.

 Today is a day to have a rest. Just because it is a day of acclimatization we do not stay quiet. We will come across to know the culture of Namche by exploring various places here. This day is necessary in order to adjust your body temperature so that you don’t fall sick during your trekking period. Today we will even visit Sagarmatha National Park.

 Today is a day to challenge your body. We climb upwards and move above Dudh Koshi River. Moving higher we get to see the path towards Tengboche. The way is bounded by the other Himalayas as well. We encounter different wildlife on our way such as Danfe (national bird of Nepal) which is very common in this region Now the track inclines downwards to Phunkitenga from Trashing. It is time to have lunch. We again go upwards crossing the green forest to arrive at Tengboche. Tengboche looks extremely beautiful as it is mounted by hills and forests. We will spend our night here in Tengboche.

 Douglas is our next destination. We keep moving towards Khumbu Glacier. Walking with the view of Tawache and Chotlaste takes you to Lobuche. Due to geographical reasons, Lobuche is very cold. Overnight in Lobuche.

 The day has finally arrived where your dream will come into existence. We move further towards Everest Base Camp (EBC). It is a ground place where mountaineers make themselves ready to climb the highest peak of the world, Mt. Everest, which measures 8,848. No words can describe the feeling of being here.  Our instant destination is Kalapathhar. To witness the sunrise we get up early in the morning and head towards it. We walk through a vertical way which is somehow difficult. Kalapatthar is a rocky peak. The scenic sight from Kalapathhar will stick to your memory forever. For lunch, we will head towards Lobuche. Walking for some hours will take us to Dzongla.

 We wake up early in dawn to move towards Chola Pass. We follow the contracted trail which leads us to the main glacier. From Cho La Pass we can see various pretty looking peaks such as Baruntse, Ama Dablam and many more. Various cracks are found on the way so you need to be aware of the track. Inkling downwards takes us to Nymagawa Valley. To spend our night we move further to Thangnak which is a few hours walk from here.

 The present destination is Ngozumba glacier. Gokyo valley is seen so pure and classy from Ngozumba. Walking for around 45 minutes we will arrive at Goko Valley. We will halt at night here.

 Today we will move towards the north of Gokyo Lake. The trail today is challenging. The background view of Gokyo and mountains will leave you speechless. Moving further ahead takes us to Renjo Pass which lies at an altitude of 5,420m. We arrive at the peak of the pass. Looking backward you get to encounter the tower of Everest and Makalu. While coming down from the pass you need to be very careful. There is a glacial lake ahead. Moving forward for some distance we arrive at Lungden where we will spend our night.

 After having our lunch we will walk down the Bhote Koshi River. We arrive at Marlung crossing Nangpa valley. The whole trail is sloping downward till we reach Tarang. We reach Thame and spend our night here.

 While moving towards Bhote Khola you get to see various popular Buddhist rock painting. Himalayan Thar can be observed from here. We will walk to Thamo and spend some time there. Now we get back to Namche Bazaar. Crossing a suspension bridge we arrive at Dudh Koshi River. We will reach up to Jorsale and then return back to Monjo. Overnight in Monjo.

FAQs

The distance from Lukla to Everest Base Camp is approximately 130 km. It takes around 11 days for a return trip. 

The air at the base camp is quite thin because of the high elevation (5,364 m). Therefore, it can get tedious for some trekkers to breathe. We suggest you take your time while ascending towards the base camp and do not rush. Maintain your pace and do take a rest.

Diamox is the general medicine that trekkers take to alleviate the symptoms of altitude sickness. The great thing about this medication is, it does not have any side effects, so most trekkers take it. Still consult your doctor and carry whatever medicine he/she suggests to you.

No, you do not need crampons for Everest Base Camp Trek. Good quality comfortable trekking boots and trekking poles are enough.

Best time to go on Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek

You can go on Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek from March to April in the spring and October to November in the autumn season. These months have the most stable weather and moderate climate, which make them the perfect time for trekking in the Himalayas. The trail gets bloomed with lovely rhododendron, and the views are exceptional. The temperature ranges from 15°C to 0°C and below. 

Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek difficulty

Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek is difficult and only recommended to experienced trekkers. Especially as our itinerary crosses two high passes, it makes the trek challenging. You will be walking for numerous days on mixed terrain. There will be many steep and rugged paths too. 
5 to 6 hours of the walk is required daily, therefore your stamina and physical fitness matter a lot. Along with that, you also have to survive the remoteness of the region and constantly be aware of altitude sickness. Mode of transportation during the trek

During the trek, you will drive to Jiri in a public or private vehicle as per the availability. From there onwards, you will trek to EBC and drop down to Lukla to take a flight back to Kathmandu. Other than this, there will be a private vehicle for a tour in Kathmandu and airport pickup/drop. 

Electricity and Charging Facilities 

You can get electricity, mostly solar electricity, in the villages to charge your electronic devices. Many places do charge a few extra bucks to let you charge your devices. Don't forget to carry extra batteries, or you can also get a solar charger.

Sim Card and WiFi

WiFi is available in many villages in the lower elevation. The network might not be stable all the time because of altitude, but you can use it to quickly update your loved ones regarding your whereabouts. Likewise, you can also carry a Nepali SIM card to use the internet. As per NCELL (telecommunication company), you can use data at EBC too, but the network might get poor and do not work most of the time.

Luggage

For luggage, the porters will carry duffel bags with all the heavy clothing and essentials. Trekkers carry a light day pack to keep a water bottle, snacks, cash, and other important stuff that they might need on hand during the Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek 26 Days. Extra luggage you can store in the hotel's locker room safely for free of cost. 

Child policy

Tipping to crew members

Tipping can get bothersome sometimes. It's all about your gratitude and respect for their work. So to help you, we have made this quick guideline that you can follow or take as a reference. After completing the tour, you can pay $20 to the tour guide and $10 to the driver. Similarly, trekkers pay $150 each to the guide that later gets divided among guide and porters. 

Personal expenses 

We do not pay for your shopping expenses or drinks/snacks out of offered meals. All extra payments and additionals stay in Nepal are not covered in the package cost. You can check our cost includes and exclude section or more information.

Insurance, rescue, evacuation

Our trekking guides are super reliable and experienced to tackle any emergency in the Himalayas. They will make sure you are safe and sound on the trail. Likewise, travel insurance is necessary for Jiri to Everest Base Camp trekking. Make sure to include air evacuation and medical bills in the insurance.
