About Makalu Base Camp Trek

Makalu Base Camp trail is one of the least-touched trekking routes in the Himalayas. It is a highly demanding trek with unparalleled views of the snowclad mountains and verdant valleys. Makalu region was completely closed to the outside world till the 1950s. Even after the first trek in the region by Eric Shipton, the Makalu Base Camp trek still remains an unspoiled part of the Himalayas. You'll be trekking around the fifth-highest mountain in the world, Mt. Makalu (8,463 m).

As mentioned earlier, the trail is strenuous and requires previous trekking experience. Not many travelers know about the Makalu Base Camp trekking package and the adventures it holds. Therefore, the trail is also not crowded at all and is perfect for trekkers who love tranquility. It is an offbeat trek in the remotest part of Nepal. Due to the lack of services along the trail, Makalu Base Camp Trekking is usually done in the camping style.

You trek through the remote Tibetan villages and also get to meet the Sherpas residing in the region. The locals have a very simple lifestyle, unfiltered with modernization and deeply rooted in their centuries-old culture. Of course, they are very welcoming and love to interact with the trekkers. Talking about the views during Makalu Base Camp Trek 21 days, the venture will not disappoint you.

You trek in the Makalu Barun National Park, rich in flora and fauna. Likewise, the trail winds through the gorgeous Arun and Barun valleys. The landscapes during the trek are surreal and backed up by constant views of the Himalayan mountains like Mt. Makalu (8,463 m), Mt. Everest (8,849 m), Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), Mt. Baruntse (7,162 m), Mt. Chamlang (7,319 m), Mt. Lhotse (8,516 m), etc.

If we have to choose one best offbeat trekking in Nepal then the Makalu Base Camp trek will be it. We are not exaggerating the trekking experience this particular trek offers. The wilderness of the region, stunning sceneries, intimate encounters with locals, ancient stupas along the way, gorgeous waterfalls & streams, lush forests, and glaciers all are worth the flattering remarks we are leaving so far.

Useful Information

The ideal time for Makalu Base Camp Trek

The best time to trek to Makalu base camp is from March to April and October to November. The spring and autumn seasons are the peak trekking seasons in the Himalayas and are perfect to travel in the Makalu region. You get to witness seasonal vegetation and wildlife. Likewise, the stable weather, mild climate, and clear visibility make the trekking experience phenomenal. clear

Makalu Base Camp Trek difficulty

Makalu Base Camp trekking is a very challenging trek in terms of terrain, services along the way, and elevation. It is a high-altitude trek that crosses numerous passes above 4,000 meters. Some of the passes you cross during the trek area of Sherpani col, West col, Amphu Lapcha, and Tutu La Pass (4,125 m).

It's an off-the-beaten trek. The trails are steep and trodden. You need a lot of energy and prior high-altitude walking experience. The region is very remote, so the limited services make the journey more difficult. On average 6 hours of the walk is needed every single day.

Mode of transportation during the trek

We use a private vehicle to commute to/from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, and during the sightseeing. While trekking, we use a flight to Tumlingtar and a local jeep ride to Num, the starting and ending point of the trek.

Electricity and Charging Facilities

Well, you'll get electricity in most of the villages to charge your devices, but it's better not to completely rely on it. There can be power shortages sometimes, and you have to pay a few extra bucks to get the service. If you are planning to travel and create a lot of photos and video content, we recommend you carry spare batteries or a solar charger. Usually, the charging stations are separately made around the reception area.

Sim Card and WiFi

First of all, you may get paid for WiFi in some of the villages at the lower altitude. Carry a Nepali sim card to use cellular data. We'll help you get one. Once you go beyond 2,500 meters to 3,000 meters, the network will not work that nicely. So, it's better to prepare yourself to go without using the internet at all for some days.

Luggage

Makalu Base Camp Trekking is a very remote trek. We highly recommend you pack all the essentials. We give duffel bags to our guests to pack their necessities, and every trekker has a weight limit of 10 kg. Likewise, trekkers can carry a day pack with a 5 kg weight limit.

Child policy

Trekking with your toddler to Makalu Base Camp is not a good idea. The region is way more remote than the famous EBC trek and ABC trek. Likewise, the trail is very demanding, and the high elevation can get a huge challenge for a toddler to handle. We recommend you contact us once regarding the child policy for Makalu Base Camp Trekking.

Tipping to crew members

The tips are not covered in our package cost. So, we recommend you include tip money in your personal expenses budget. Trekking in a group gives you the advantage to tip in the group, which of course, costs less per head. You can tip any amount you wish. For instance, USD 5 to the tour guide, USD 2 to the driver, and USD 100 to the trek guide for each member of the group is the ideal number.

Personal expenses

The Makalu Base Camp Trek package cost does not cover things like cross-country flights, shopping, travel insurance, tips, extra snacks, and accommodation out of the itinerary. So, we recommend you budget additional money for these things. Our costs exclude and include section gives more in detail information. You should check that.

Insurance, Rescue, Evacuation

Makalu Base Camp Trek demands travel insurance. You cannot join this trek without showing travel insurance proof covering emergency evacuation and medical bills. Our on-field crew is very reliable and well-trained in offering first aid. We only use air evacuation if the medical emergency is not treatable with first aid. Happening like this is rare, but still, it's best to be well prepared in the Himalayas.
