About Short Everest Base Camp Trek

The Everest base camp short trek 5 days is a perfect alternative to the EBC 14 days trek package. We have curated this itinerary to offer travelers with a short time an opportunity to trek in the Khumbu region and enjoy the sensational beauty of the Himalayas. The Everest base camp short trek is for trekkers of all ages, experience, and fitness levels.

The Everest base camp short trekking package involves moderate walking and trail conditions. You only trek for two days on this trek. The trek begins from Lukla and descends to Monjo village for the night stay. The trail descends through lush rhododendron forests and small villages. The next day, following the Dudh Koshi River, you will walk via dense forests, crossing numerous suspension bridges to Hotel Everest View.

While trekking from Monjo (2,835 m/9,301 ft) to Hotel Everest View (3,962 m/13,000 ft), you can see stunning views of mountains like Kongde Ri (6,187 m/20,299 ft), Thamserku (6,608 m/21,680 ft), Khumbila (5,761 m/18,901 ft), etc. Likewise, from the hotel, you can see the first mesmerizing view of Mt. Everest (8,849 m/29,032 ft) along with Lhotse (8,516 m/27,940 ft), Nuptse (7,861 m/25,791 ft), and Ama Dablam (6,812 m/22,349 ft).

The trekking part ends here, and the following day, we have arranged an adventurous and breathtaking helicopter flight to Kala Patthar (5,545 m/18,192 ft) and Everest Base Camp (5,364 m/17,598 ft). The helicopter flight is exceptionally amazing as well. You will witness the surreal aerial panorama of the Himalayas up close that only a few travelers get to enjoy.

The helicopter flight will be comfortable and safe. You will fly over beautiful river valleys, lush forests, rolling hills, picturesque villages, and glaciers. The flight lands at Kalar Patthar for 5 to 10 minutes. You will get a chance to stand there physically, enjoy the rejuvenating fresh air, and relish the spectacular mountain panorama.

From here, the helicopter flight continues to the Everest base camp. Due to limited space at the base camp, you will not land here, but the aerial view is equally worth it. The view of Khumbu Glacier and Khumbu Icefall is outstanding too. The later part of the flight goes back to Kathmandu via a short 15-minute stop at Lukla airport to refuel the chopper.

    Useful Information

    Accommodation and Meals

Lodge accommodation along the Everest base camp short trail offers trekkers a comfortable and convenient place to rest and rejuvenate during their journey. These lodges provide basic amenities and services to cater to the needs of trekkers.

Lodge facilities and services can vary from one accommodation to another. In more remote areas, the facilities may be more basic, while in larger villages like Namche Bazaar, lodges may offer more amenities.

Below is a look at the facilities typically available in lodge accommodations during the trek:

Rooms: The rooms are usually twin-sharing or multi-bed rooms with basic bedding, such as clean bedsheets, blankets, and pillows. While the rooms are generally simple, they provide a cozy place to rest and sleep after a day of trekking. Note that we only book single rooms at prior notice.

Toilets: The lodges we book in this package have mostly private toilet facilities, which are basic but clean. These are often Western-style or squat toilets, depending on the lodge.

Dining Area: There is a communal dining area where trekkers can enjoy meals and socialize in the lodges. These dining areas often have large windows, allowing guests to take in the scenic views while enjoying their meals.

Meals: You will get a variety of meal options, including local Nepali dishes, international cuisine, and snacks/bars. The menu typically includes options like dal bhat, Thukpa, momo, pasta, sandwich, soups, and a range of beverages. Meals are prepared using fresh ingredients and provide the necessary energy for trekkers.

Hot Showers: Most lodges in the Khumbu region provide hot shower facilities, allowing trekkers to freshen up and rejuvenate after a long day of trekking. Keep in mind that hot water availability may be limited and may come at an additional cost.

Charging Facilities: Electricity in the mountains can be unreliable, and charging may be available only during certain hours or at an additional cost. You can carry an additional battery or a power bank for backup.

Wi-Fi: While Wi-Fi availability is becoming more common in lodge accommodations, especially in larger towns like Namche Bazaar, it's important to manage expectations. Wi-Fi in the mountains can be slow and unreliable, and connectivity may vary from lodge to lodge.

Best time to do a short trek in the Everest region

The Khumbu region in Nepal, home to the majestic Everest and other towering peaks, experiences distinct weather patterns throughout the year. Weather conditions in the mountains can be unpredictable, and temperatures can vary significantly between different elevations. So, trekking during the right time and being prepared for sudden weather changes is crucial.

    Spring (March to May)

Spring is a popular time for trekking in the Khumbu region due to milder temperatures and relatively stable weather. During this season, the weather gradually gets warmer as the days progress. In March, temperatures at lower elevations range from around 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F), while at higher altitudes, temperatures can drop below freezing point.

April brings warmer temperatures with daytime averages of 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F) at lower elevations. May sees temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F) during the day, making it the warmest month of spring.

    Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is considered the best time for trekking in the Khumbu region, as the weather tends to be stable, with clear skies and excellent visibility. September starts with relatively warm temperatures, ranging from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F) during the day at lower elevations.

October is the most popular month for trekkers, with temperatures ranging from 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F) during the day. November brings a cooler climate, with average temperature ranging from 0°C to 10°C (32°F to 50°F) during the day at lower elevations.

    Winter (December to February)

The winter season has cold temperatures and occasional snowfall, especially at higher elevations. December and January are the coldest months, with daytime temperatures ranging from -10°C to 5°C (14°F to 41°F) at lower elevations.

In the higher regions, temperatures can drop well below freezing, with nighttime temperatures often reaching -20°C (-4°F) or lower. February starts to show signs of warming, with average daytime temperatures ranging from -5°C to 5°C (23°F to 41°F) at lower elevations.

    Summer/Monsoon (June to August)

Summer overlaps with the monsoon season. The region sees heavy rainfall and cloudy skies. The monsoon brings frequent precipitation, making trekking more challenging, particularly due to slippery trails and limited visibility.

Daytime temperatures during this season can vary, ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F) at lower elevations. The humidity is high, and mountain views may be obscured by clouds and mist.

    Difficulty and preparation

The Everest base camp trek takes you through diverse and challenging terrain. The trail varies from low-lying valleys and lush forests to rugged mountainous terrain and icy glaciers. The trek starts at 2,800 meters (9,186 feet) in Lukla and gradually ascends to 3,962 meters (13,000 ft) at Everest View Hotel. From here, you will fly to Kala Patthar at 5,545 meters (18,192 ft) and spend 5 to 10 minutes.

The overall difficulty of the EBC short trek is graded moderate. You can participate in this trek without previous trekking experience.

The trek involves long hours of walking each day, with average daily trekking durations of 5-7 hours. The slight physical exertion, combined with the high altitude and varying weather conditions demands good physical fitness. To prepare for the Everest base camp short trek 5 days, you can exercise and go on long walks and day hikes.

    Altitude sickness

Altitude sickness is common during the EBC trek due to the significant gain in elevation. Also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), it can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness level. In case of any medical emergency, our guide will provide you with needed first-aid.

These are some of the symptoms of AMS- headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, and difficulty sleeping. To mitigate the risk of altitude sickness, acclimatize properly by taking rest days and ascending gradually. Drink plenty of water and inform your guide if you experience any symptoms of altitude sickness.
